A traditional and healthy root crop, turnips (also known as swedes) are great paired with mashed carrot, or served simply on their own.

They were also the veg of choice for the original Hallowe’en lantern, before the Pumpkin took over as the popular choice.

How to grow

Tolerant crop, grown in a wide range of conditions. Can be held in storage for a month or so at end of season.

Buying and storing tips

Choose swedes with smooth, unblemished skins. The smaller they are they sweeter they tend to be. Though best eaten fresh, turnips keep extremely well in the fridge.

Recipe inspiration

  • Boiled or steamed and served with butter and white pepper.

  • In soups or gratins.
